First off, I would like to extend a big thank you to an old friend for sending this client my way! Ashley Goodwin Woods (www.ashleygoodwin.com) and I go way back to our first days of college, where we met and soon after graduating, started working together at a local design studio (where she also got me the job). So, one of my pet peeves is to “give credit where credit is due,” thank you Ashley!! (Did I mention that she is living the life all the way in Oahu, Hawaii now!? Nice!)
So, it has been a couple of months since Patty & I first met about the design of her house, and I am so anxious to finally put all of the rooms together for her, I can hardly stand it. She recently purchased a new home and has had trouble getting it to look the way she wants, that’s when she reached out to Ashley for a referral…
The Design….
The first thing I saw when I entered into the foyer was a great piece of art hanging on the wall in the kitchen area. It is mainly purples and oranges…That is where my color scheme for the front of the house evolved from. In the foyer we are doing a custom console with a great purple glass lamp, punchy piece of art and an area rug. For the overhead light fixture we are incorporating gold & doing a great lookin’ drum pendant.
Off of the foyer to the right is a large sitting room that Patty’s husband Phillip claims as “his” room. One of the requirements is that it has to be comfy, so my initial idea is to do two custom sofas facing each other with down wrapped cushions. We are going to use her current cream shag rug to define the space, and add a cool round rotating coffee table in between the sofas. I found two amazing consoles that we are going to use to flank each side of the fireplace which will provide tons of storage. Patty really did not like the style of the current fireplace mantle & marble surround, so I have collaborated with Nancy Martin of Impact Design Group (http://www.northcarolinacustomclosets.com) and we are fabricating a new mantle that has clean lines and a substantial stature. I am also in the process of getting new glass tile installed to replace the marble. This room is going to have a lot of color pops so we are going to paint the walls a simple light grey that won’t distract from all of the uses of color I plan to do. Even though Phillip claims this is “his” room, I know Patty will be enjoying it just as much once we finish!
We sure are keeping our carpenter busy these days, a lot of the key pieces we are doing, such as the sofa console table, media cabinet, and even the foyer console table are not the correct size we need for the space, so custom it is!!
The next room I tackled was the kitchen.. I definitely wanted to use her art in the space, so I tied together the art and existing orange lamps with some new chair cushions, a rug & roman shade over the sink. We have also decided to put a funky amber lucite chair at her desk.
Finally, the family room… They use this room regularly and wanted it to be comfortable and wear well with 2 dogs, 1 cat & son, Harlan. We are going to reuse her existing leather sectional and update the look with fresh colorful pillows, a bright green ottoman, a custom funky sofa console table and dramatic curtain panels. What’s really going to bring this room together is carpet we are using, it has a fun pattern and is very durable!
After months of planning & waiting for the big stuff to arrive, I know the Comer’s will love their new living spaces. Be sure to check back for the install pictures, and yes, I will have before & afters that will knock your socks off!
