on the boards…. boards literally!

I am so thankful for the referrals our current clients are giving us! Recently, I had the pleasure of meeting Betsy Norvell, a referral from the Lee’s, who I have done many rooms for! Betsy’s son, Sam, is 14 and wants to move into the room over the garage, he needs everything. They are also very open minded and want something that will last him for a long time.

The Dilemma ::
Room over garage = long awkward space!!

– The room is very long and has one window centered on the wall at the end of the space.

– Sam wants a bed area, a hang out area, and a desk area in this space.

– My initial thought is to put the bed where the TV is, however that would take up more space and leave none for a chair and ottoman. Scratch that idea…

I decided to leave the bed where it was, at the end of the space, but what about that odd window? We could have installed a long curtain rod with panels behind the bed to make the window disappear, but then you have the weird ceiling angles to worry about…

Here is what we are doing instead..

A wood clad wall treatment!

Sam already had his grey headboard & rusty red bedding selected from West Elm. That was a perfect start for me. We are doing an end of the bed storage ottoman and a small scale lounge chair for his hang out area. The industrial side tables and black lamps will be a nice contrast against the natural wood wall treatment. Even though we are eliminating natural light, this room has many recessed cans and with the large new light fixture there will be plenty of light. At the other end of the room we are doing a custom built in desk unit made by our carpenter with an additional rolling desk chair that can moved to the hang out area if needed. Sam and his friends will be able to play video games and watch movies on his new flat screen TV, underneath it we are doing this large 78″ wide dresser in this amazing red finish. This room screams BOY to me, and will definitely last him well into college!
